Suicide Kings: A group of desperate kids kidnap a slick underworld mob boss and keep him prisoner to boost leverage in the kidnapping of Thomas’ sibling. Although throughout one long day, the mobster Walken, in fine form measures up his captors and plays on their weaknesses. Well planned piece, with some excellent tale twists and first-rate acting jobs. Cast includes Christopher Walken, Denis Leary, Henry Thomas, Sean Patrick Flanery, Laura San Giacomo, and Brad Garrett. Stagecoach: One of the best American films, and a landmark in the aging of the Western. This is the film that launched John Wayne to authentic stardom. Mitchell won an Oscar as the intoxicated physician, as did the music score. Script by Dudley Nichos, from Ernest Haycox’s tale “Level to Lordsburg” whose plot is comparable to Man de Maupassant’s Boule de Suif. Cast includes Claire Trevor, John Wayne, Andy Devine, John Carradine, Thomas Mitchell, Tim Holt, Tom Tyer, and Jack Pennick. (96 minutes,’39)
From Justin to Kelly: Drink sunscreen rather than sitting through this insipid lyrical piece made for Television’s American Hero megastars, which finds them trying to make a love connection throughout Miami spring break. No one was anticipating Shakespeare, however there’s less weight here than in an Archie comic magazine. Cast includes Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini, Katherine Bailess, Anika Noni Rose, Greg Siff, Brian Dietzen, and Jason Yribar. (81 minutes, 2003)
Belizaire the Cajun: Assante is well cast as a charismatic drug dealer in love with a Cajun woman who is the spouse of a prosperous Englishman. This is a choppy and somehow unsurprising drama in reference to the English prejudice and brutality toward the Cajuns in’th century Louisiana. Cast includes Armand Assante, Gail Youngs, Michael Schoeffiing, Stephen McHattie, Can Patton, and Nancy Barrett. (100 minutes,’86)
Rockula: Teenage vampire Cameron is powerless to lose his virginity due to an age-old hex. Cast includes Dean Cameron, Tawny Fere, Susan Tyrrell, Bo Diddley, Thomas Dolby, and Toni Basil. (87 minutes,’90)
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: On Harry’s eleventh birthday, he learns about who he is. He is the orphaned son of two very powerful wizards. He too has magical powers, and he is invited to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is off on the biggest adventure imaginable.
Rocky Balboa: Rocky has settled in to retirement, but a virtual match showing Rocky beating the current champ, Mason Dixon, has caused a stir. Now, the champ wants Rocky in the ring. Rocky decides he must do this fight, and he starts to train again to get back in the ring one last time.
